Does palliative radiotherapy help with persistent bone pain?

Radiotherapy directs treatment at a painful area, which can reduce activity from cancer cells and inflammation around the bone. It is intended to ease symptoms rather than remove cancer throughout the body. Your team may use imaging to identify the target and consider the bone involved, nearby organs, your mobility and other treatments. Pain can briefly feel worse after treatment, and improvement may develop gradually. Pain medicines and other support may still be needed.

Tell the cancer team where the pain is, how it affects walking or sleep, and whether it is new, changing or present at rest. Share all medicines and mention previous radiotherapy to the same area. Ask about the treatment schedule, skin or bowel effects, activity advice and what pain relief to use while waiting for benefit. A walking aid or other support may reduce strain on a weakened bone.

Get urgent help for sudden severe bone pain after a minor movement, inability to bear weight, a limb that looks deformed, new weakness or numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These changes can indicate a fracture or pressure on the spinal cord.

Ask whether imaging is needed, what benefit to expect, how the target will be protected, which pain medicines to continue, and whom to call if pain worsens after treatment.
