Does palliative care treat mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma can affect the lining around the lungs or, less often, other body areas. Palliative care focuses on the problems you are experiencing, such as breathlessness, chest pain, cough, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, sleep difficulty or emotional strain. It can also support family members and help clarify your priorities.

The team works with specialists managing mesothelioma. Cancer-directed options may include procedures, medicines or other treatments when suitable. Palliative care does not replace those options; it adds support for symptoms and decisions throughout the illness.

Ask for help when symptoms begin to affect washing, dressing, eating, walking or sleep. Describe whether breathlessness occurs at rest or with activity, and report chest pain, cough and swallowing changes. Bring your medicines and note what has helped or caused side effects.

A palliative care review can cover symptom medicines, energy conservation, breathing support, nutrition, emotional care and planning for home needs. Ask how the team will communicate with your mesothelioma specialists and whom to call between visits.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion or severe chest pain. Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, rapidly worsening cough, increasing pain, inability to keep fluids down or a clear decline in your ability to manage daily tasks.
