Does palliative care treat cervical cancer?

A palliative care team focuses on comfort and quality of life at any stage of cervical cancer. It may help with pain, nausea, tiredness, constipation, poor appetite, sleep problems, anxiety or low mood. It can also support practical needs, family communication and choices about treatment goals. Palliative care is different from hospice care and does not mean that cancer treatment has stopped.

The team may work with your gynaecologic oncology team. Treatment aimed at the cancer, such as surgery, radiotherapy or medicines, is considered separately. Palliative care may make those treatments easier to tolerate by addressing symptoms and concerns early.

Ask your cancer team for a palliative care referral if symptoms interfere with walking, eating, sleeping, urination, bowel movements or daily activities. Bring a list of symptoms, medicines and questions. Mention vaginal bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain during urination or bowel movements, and any side effects, because these details can guide support.

The team can review medicines, suggest physical or emotional support, and help you compare options with your personal priorities. Keep the palliative care team informed when symptoms change or a new cancer treatment is planned.

Contact your oncology team promptly for bleeding that is new or increasing, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, inability to pass urine or stool, repeated vomiting, confusion, or fever. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathlessness or sudden weakness. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for a routine palliative care appointment.
