Does Paget's disease of bone cause persistent bone pain?

Paget's disease of bone changes the way affected bone is broken down and rebuilt. The remodeled bone may become enlarged or less mechanically efficient, causing a deep ache, tenderness, or pain around a nearby joint. Some people have no symptoms. Persistent bone pain alone does not identify the cause, so a clinician may consider the location, examination findings, blood tests, and imaging.

Arrange a medical assessment if pain continues, returns repeatedly, or limits walking, sleep, or ordinary tasks. Record where it hurts, when it is worse, whether movement changes it, and any new hearing, vision, or limb changes. Do not start supplements or pain medicines regularly without checking that they fit your other conditions and medicines.

Seek urgent care after a sudden severe bone pain with deformity or inability to use a limb. Prompt assessment is also needed for new weakness, loss of sensation, difficulty walking, severe headache, or sudden changes in hearing or vision.
