Does ovarian drilling treat anovulation?

Anovulation means the ovary is not releasing an egg regularly. Ovarian drilling is a keyhole procedure in which a surgeon makes small openings in ovarian tissue. In selected people, often when polycystic ovary syndrome is contributing to irregular ovulation, this may change ovarian hormone activity and help ovulation resume.

The effect is not aimed at every cause of anovulation. Your clinician will consider your ovulation history, hormone results, ovarian appearance, fertility goals, and previous medicines. The procedure can involve anaesthesia and surgery-related risks, including scar tissue that may affect fertility.

A fertility or gynaecology assessment should clarify why ovulation is absent before surgery is considered. Discuss medicine options, the expected monitoring plan, recovery, and how ovulation would be tracked. Ask whether your partner’s fertility or your fallopian tubes also need assessment as part of pregnancy planning.

Contact your surgical team promptly after a procedure for worsening abdominal pain, fever, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, wound redness, or difficulty passing urine. Before treatment, seek review for very irregular periods or trouble conceiving so the cause can be assessed rather than assumed.
