A growth or fluid in the abdomen can reduce the room available for the stomach to expand comfortably. Abdominal discomfort, bloating or changes in digestion may add to the sensation. The clinical term for becoming full after eating less than expected is early satiety. Reflux, ulcers, medication effects, stress and other digestive problems can also cause it, so the symptom alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Book a medical review when the change is ongoing, recurring or affecting how much you can eat. Keep a brief record of meals, fullness, nausea, bloating, pain, bowel changes and any unplanned weight change. A clinician may assess your abdomen, review medicines and decide whether further tests are suitable.

Seek urgent care if early fullness is accompanied by persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, trouble breathing or inability to keep fluids down.
