Does ovarian cancer cause abdominal swelling?

Ovarian cancer can affect the space and tissues within the abdomen. Fluid may collect there, a process called ascites, or an enlarged mass may create pressure and distension. Swelling can occur alongside bloating, pelvic discomfort, changes in bowel habits or feeling full sooner than usual. These symptoms are not specific to cancer; digestive conditions, hormonal changes and other causes can look similar.

Make an appointment if the swelling is new, persistent, progressively increasing or different from your usual bloating. Describe when it started, whether it changes during the day, and any related appetite, bowel, urinary or menstrual changes. A clinician can examine your abdomen and determine whether imaging or other evaluation is needed.

Get urgent help if swelling comes with severe pain, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas. Rapid worsening also warrants prompt assessment. Emergency symptoms need attention because abdominal pressure can have causes requiring immediate treatment, regardless of whether cancer is involved.

You could ask what might explain the swelling, whether fluid is suspected, which examination or scan would help, and what changes should lead you to seek urgent care.
