Does osteotomy treat knee osteoarthritis?

In a knee osteotomy, the surgeon cuts and reshapes a bone near the knee, then holds it in a corrected position while it heals. The aim is to make weight pass through a healthier part of the joint. This approach is usually considered when arthritis mainly affects one compartment and the leg alignment contributes to uneven pressure. It does not restore worn cartilage or reverse every form of arthritis.

An examination and imaging help show where the damage and alignment problem are. The clinician also considers pain, movement, stability, activity needs and other health factors. A different treatment may be more suitable when several compartments are badly affected or the knee has substantial stiffness.
