Does osteotomy treat hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia means the socket or surrounding alignment does not fully support the femoral head. An osteotomy changes the pelvic or thigh-bone shape so the joint surfaces meet more securely. The operation may be considered when the hip remains usable but coverage is insufficient, particularly when pain or instability affects activity. Advanced cartilage wear may alter the surgical options because realignment cannot restore severely damaged cartilage.

A hip-preservation specialist reviews pain, clicking or instability, walking tolerance and prior treatment. Examination and imaging assess socket coverage, hip shape, cartilage and alignment. Discuss activity goals, the expected protected-weight-bearing period, physiotherapy, possible hardware symptoms and how recovery will be followed. Do not assume that a visible difference alone requires an operation.

Arrange assessment for persistent groin pain, a limp, reduced hip motion, recurrent giving-way or symptoms that limit ordinary activities.
