Does osteotomy treat avascular necrosis of the hip?

Avascular necrosis damages the blood supply to the femoral head. As the bone weakens, the rounded joint surface can deform and cause pain, stiffness and reduced walking tolerance. An osteotomy changes the alignment of bone so a healthier part of the joint carries more load. It is more relevant before advanced collapse in carefully selected hips; established joint destruction may require a different reconstruction.

An orthopaedic specialist reviews your symptoms, examination and imaging, and considers the size and position of the damaged area, joint cartilage, age, activity needs and the other hip. Treatment planning may also address causes such as steroid exposure, alcohol use or an underlying illness. Until reviewed, use a walking aid if advised and avoid activities that sharply increase hip pain.

Arrange specialist review for persistent groin or hip pain, a new limp, increasing stiffness or difficulty bearing weight. Seek urgent care after a fall if you cannot stand, or if the hip becomes suddenly very painful, hot or swollen with fever. Earlier assessment can clarify whether the femoral head is still structurally preserved.
