Does osteoarthritis cause reduced range of motion?

Short answer
Reduced Range of Motion is a very common presentation of Osteoarthritis, but limited movement can have other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What may contribute
- Pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced strength can all restrict movement
- Useful approach
- Frequent comfortable movement supported by targeted strengthening
How movement becomes limited
Osteoarthritis can alter the joint surfaces and the tissues around them. Pain, swelling, stiffness, and changes in the joint may make bending, straightening, gripping, or turning harder. A person may gradually avoid a movement because it hurts, which can further reduce flexibility and strength. The pattern depends on the joint involved; hip changes may affect walking or putting on shoes, while hand changes may affect opening containers.
Reduced movement does not identify osteoarthritis on its own. An examination helps distinguish it from an injury, inflammation, nerve problem, or another joint condition.
Ways to support joint movement
Use gentle, regular movement rather than forcing a painful end position. Short walks, comfortable mobility exercises, and strengthening can help preserve function. A physiotherapist can adapt exercises to the affected joint and show ways to modify work, stairs, or household tasks. Heat may make movement more comfortable for some people. Discuss medicines or other treatments with a clinician, particularly if you have other health conditions.
When to seek care
Book an evaluation when restricted movement persists, progresses, or interferes with dressing, walking, work, or sleep. Seek urgent care for a suddenly locked or deformed joint, inability to use the limb, a hot swollen joint with fever, or severe symptoms following an injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is limiting your movement, which exercises match your joint, and how much discomfort is acceptable during activity. Ask whether an assessment by physiotherapy or imaging is needed, and how progress will be measured.

Questions people ask
Can exercise improve movement with osteoarthritis?
Appropriately chosen mobility and strengthening exercises can support function, especially when progressed gradually and adjusted to symptoms.
Is reduced range of motion proof of osteoarthritis?
No. Several joint, muscle, nerve, and injury-related problems can restrict movement and need different care.
