Does oral rehydration therapy treat norovirus infection?

Norovirus infection commonly causes sudden vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach pain and nausea. The immediate concern is fluid and electrolyte loss. Oral rehydration solution helps the gut absorb water and salts, supporting circulation and normal body function while the infection runs its course. It does not destroy norovirus or prevent transmission. Rest and careful hygiene are part of managing the illness.

Sip oral rehydration solution often, using small amounts if nausea is strong. Follow the packet directions exactly and discard prepared solution as directed. Resume bland foods when able, without forcing food. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet and before handling food; alcohol hand gel may not work well against norovirus. Stay home while actively unwell and clean contaminated surfaces safely.

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down.
