Does oral rehydration therapy treat gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis can cause watery stools, vomiting, abdominal cramps and loss of appetite. These symptoms remove fluid and electrolytes from the body. A correctly prepared oral rehydration solution contains water and a balanced mix of salts and glucose that helps the intestine absorb fluid. It supports recovery while the illness settles, but it does not kill a virus or treat every possible cause of gastroenteritis.

Take small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution, especially after a loose stool or episode of vomiting. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with slower sips. Follow the product instructions for mixing; an overly concentrated or diluted solution may not replace electrolytes appropriately. Continue light foods as tolerated and avoid relying on very sugary drinks, which can aggravate diarrhoea. Wash hands with soap and water and avoid preparing food for others while symptoms continue.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly if urination becomes very infrequent, the mouth is very dry, dizziness persists, or a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a long-term illness is becoming dehydrated.
