Does oral rehydration therapy treat food poisoning?

Food poisoning may cause diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and stomach cramps. Losing fluid and electrolytes through these symptoms can lead to dehydration. Oral rehydration solution replaces those losses and supports recovery while the digestive illness settles. It does not neutralise every toxin, kill every germ, or stop diarrhoea immediately. The cause and severity determine whether a clinician recommends testing, medicine, or observation.

Take frequent small sips of correctly prepared oral rehydration solution, particularly after loose stools or vomiting. Follow the packet instructions and use safe water; an overly concentrated mixture can be harmful. Rest, wash hands thoroughly, and avoid preparing food for other people while unwell. Eat small portions when you can tolerate them. Avoid alcohol and drinks that worsen nausea or diarrhoea. Do not take antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without suitable medical advice.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact a clinician when fever is high or persistent, diarrhoea is prolonged, symptoms follow travel, or several people became ill after the same meal. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic conditions may need earlier assessment.
