Does oral rehydration therapy treat dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in. Water alone may not replace salts lost through diarrhoea, vomiting, sweating, or fever. Oral rehydration solution contains water, glucose, and electrolytes in a combination that supports absorption in the intestine. As hydration improves, symptoms such as thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, and reduced urination may ease. The solution does not treat the original cause, so ongoing losses still need attention.

Mix the product exactly as directed, using safe drinking water and the stated volume. Sip often; small amounts can be easier to keep down than a large drink. Keep breastfeeding when relevant, and continue suitable food as tolerated. Avoid adding ingredients or replacing the solution with alcohol, very sweet drinks, or unmeasured homemade mixtures. People with kidney or heart conditions should ask a clinician about the safest fluid and salt intake.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe dizziness, inability to drink, persistent vomiting, very little urine, cold or clammy skin, or unusual drowsiness. Medical assessment is also needed when diarrhoea or vomiting continues, symptoms worsen despite sipping fluids, or dehydration affects an infant, older adult, or person with a chronic illness.
