Does oral corticosteroid treatment treat stevens-johnson syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious reaction that can cause a painful rash, blisters, skin peeling, and sores on the mouth, eyes, or genitals. It may follow a medicine or, less often, an infection. Oral corticosteroids affect immune inflammation, but their use, timing, and route are decided by the hospital team after assessing the reaction.

Treatment focuses on stopping the suspected trigger when medically appropriate, protecting the skin, replacing fluids, controlling pain, checking for infection, and monitoring the eyes, mouth, breathing, and other organs. A person with suspected Stevens-Johnson syndrome should not manage it at home or wait for a routine appointment.

If this reaction is suspected, seek emergency medical care now and take every recent medicine, supplement, and prescription list with you. Do not restart a suspected medicine unless a clinician specifically advises it. Tell the team when each medicine began and when the rash, fever, pain, blisters, or mouth and eye symptoms appeared. Avoid applying new products over peeling skin unless instructed.

Go to an emergency department immediately for a rapidly spreading painful rash, skin peeling, blisters, mouth or eye sores, trouble breathing or swallowing, faintness, or fever with marked illness. Eye pain or light sensitivity is especially urgent because eye involvement can threaten vision and needs prompt specialist assessment.

Ask which medicine is suspected, what must be recorded as a drug allergy, how the skin and eyes will be monitored, and which treatments are appropriate in hospital. Before discharge, ask what symptoms require immediate return and how future medicines will be checked.
