Lichen planopilaris is an inflammatory condition affecting hair follicles on the scalp. Inflammation can cause itching, burning, redness, scale, and gradual loss of hair. When inflammation is active, a dermatologist may consider an oral corticosteroid to reduce immune activity and settle a flare. The aim is usually to protect remaining follicles and limit further scarring, rather than to regrow hair from a follicle that has been permanently damaged.
