Does antihistamine treatment treat angioedema?

Angioedema is swelling in deeper layers of the skin, often around the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or genitals. When histamine is driving the reaction, an antihistamine can lessen itching and help the swelling settle. The response may be limited when swelling is linked to a different pathway, such as some medicine-related or inherited forms. An antihistamine can control a symptom without explaining why the swelling occurred.

A clinician may ask about new foods, medicines, insect stings, infections, repeated episodes, and family history. That information helps distinguish a short-lived allergic pattern from angioedema that needs a different plan.

Use an oral antihistamine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, and check whether it can cause drowsiness or interact with other medicines. Do not take extra doses because swelling has not improved. Avoid a suspected trigger until a clinician has assessed the episode, and record when the swelling began and which areas are affected. Arrange medical advice for a first episode, recurring swelling, or symptoms that do not settle.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; faintness; confusion; or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate airway involvement or a severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for an antihistamine to work. If swelling is accompanied by widespread hives, vomiting, or wheezing, treat it as urgent and follow any emergency plan prescribed for you.

Ask whether the episode fits histamine-related angioedema, how long to use an antihistamine, which warning signs require emergency action, and whether any medicine or food should be avoided. If episodes recur, ask whether testing or an allergy and immunology referral is appropriate.
