Does oral antifungal treatment treat tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor, also called pityriasis versicolor, is linked to overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on skin. It often causes lighter or darker patches with fine scale, commonly on the chest, back, neck, or upper arms. A clinician may prefer an antifungal wash or cream for limited disease. Oral medicine may be considered when patches cover a larger area, return repeatedly, or do not respond to suitable topical treatment. The colour difference can remain after the yeast is controlled because skin pigment takes time to even out.

Use the recommended medicine for the stated duration and do not take someone else’s antifungal tablets. Tell the clinician about liver disease, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines before oral treatment. Keep the skin dry after washing and follow instructions for any medicated cleanser. The patches may not regain their usual colour immediately, so judge progress by reduced scale and new areas stopping rather than colour alone. Recurrence can happen, and a clinician may discuss a maintenance routine.

Seek medical advice if a rash is spreading, painful, crusted, oozing, or very inflamed, since those features may point to another skin problem. Arrange assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain, treatment fails, or patches return often.
