Tinea incognito is ringworm altered by a steroid cream or another anti-inflammatory treatment. The usual ring-shaped border may become less obvious while the fungal infection continues, with redness, scaling, spread, or small bumps instead. Because its appearance can be misleading, a clinician may examine the skin closely or take a scraping before selecting treatment. Oral medicine may be chosen when the infection is extensive, persistent, or difficult to reach with a cream.

Use antifungal medicine exactly as prescribed and discuss any steroid cream before continuing it. Avoid applying leftover steroid combinations to an undiagnosed rash, since they can mask changes and make assessment harder. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and do not share towels or clothing. Follow-up helps confirm that active infection has cleared, even if the redness settles before the skin looks normal.
