Does oral antifungal treatment treat nail fungus?

Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, can make a nail thick, brittle, discoloured, crumbly, or partly separated from the nail bed. Trauma, psoriasis, eczema, and other nail disorders can produce similar changes, so a nail sample or other examination may be recommended before tablets.

Oral medicine works through the bloodstream as the healthy nail gradually grows forward. This means the nail may not look normal immediately after the fungus is controlled. A topical medicine may suit a limited infection, while oral treatment can be considered when the infection involves more of the nail or several nails.

Keep nails trimmed and dry, avoid sharing clippers, disinfect or replace tools as advised, and wear breathable footwear. Treat coexisting athlete’s foot if present because skin fungus can spread back to the nail.

Before tablets, tell the clinician about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, and every medicine or supplement. Follow any requested blood-test or review plan, and do not stop or extend treatment without guidance. Improvement is judged as healthy nail growth rather than a quick change in the damaged portion.

Arrange an assessment for a painful, swollen, draining, or rapidly changing nail, or when several nails become affected. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, fever, or severe pain around the nail. People with diabetes, circulation problems, or reduced immunity should seek advice early for foot or nail changes.
