Does oral antifungal treatment treat athlete's foot?

Athlete's foot, also called tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that may cause itching, scaling, cracks, soreness, or damp-looking skin between the toes. Tablets may be considered when the infection is extensive, keeps returning, involves the soles or nails, or has not improved with an appropriate topical antifungal. The choice depends on the appearance, medical history, and response to earlier treatment.

Not every itchy or peeling foot rash is fungal. Contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and bacterial infection can look similar. Keeping the feet dry helps, but it does not replace diagnosis when symptoms persist or spread.

Use an antifungal product only as directed and continue for the recommended period, even if itching settles sooner. Wash and dry carefully between the toes, change damp socks, choose breathable footwear, and avoid sharing towels or shoes. Ask a clinician whether household contacts, footwear, or coexisting nail infection need attention. Tell them about liver problems, other medicines, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, and previous antifungal reactions before tablets are considered.

Seek prompt care if redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, or red streaking spreads beyond the rash, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation in your feet. A rapidly worsening or very painful foot needs examination. Get urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after an antifungal medicine.

Ask whether the rash is athlete's foot, which treatment reaches the affected area, and how long to use it. If tablets are suggested, ask why they are needed, what interactions matter, whether testing is useful, and which symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
