Does oral antifungal treatment help with discoloured nails?

A nail may look yellow, white, brown, green, or cloudy because of fungal infection, injury, repeated pressure, skin disease, staining, or another nail problem. Oral antifungal medicine targets fungus inside the nail unit, so it cannot correct a colour change caused by trauma or another condition. Even when treatment works, the affected part has to grow out gradually, meaning the colour may not change immediately.

A clinician may examine the nail and, when needed, test a clipping or scraping before prescribing tablets. This helps avoid exposing you to medicine that will not address the cause. A single discoloured nail, pigment that extends onto surrounding skin, or a dark streak deserves particular assessment.

Arrange an appointment if discolouration persists, spreads, or occurs with thickening or crumbling. Keep nails clean and dry, avoid picking or aggressive filing, and pause nail products if they make the colour harder to assess. Tell the clinician about liver problems, other medicines, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, and previous reactions to antifungals. Use tablets only as prescribed and attend any monitoring advised.

Seek prompt assessment for a new dark streak, pigment spreading onto the skin beside the nail, bleeding, significant pain, swelling, pus, or a nail lifting without a clear injury. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread reaction after medicine. These signs need a clinical examination rather than self-treatment for fungus.
