Does oral antibiotics for acne treat acne keloidalis nuchae?

Acne keloidalis nuchae is an inflammatory condition that causes firm, itchy or tender bumps around the back of the neck and hairline. It is not the same as ordinary facial acne. Oral antibiotics can sometimes calm active inflammation or infection-like flares, but they do not remove established scar tissue and may not address friction, close shaving, or ingrown hairs that keep the condition active.

A clinician should check whether the bumps are consistent with this diagnosis and whether scarring is developing. Other options may include topical anti-inflammatory treatment, injections into selected lesions, light-based treatment, or changes to grooming habits.

Use antibiotics only when prescribed and take them exactly as directed. Tell the prescriber about allergies, stomach or bowel problems, other medicines, and previous antibiotic reactions. Do not share leftover tablets or stop early because the bumps look calmer.

Avoid very close shaving at the nape, tight collars, and repeated rubbing. Keep the area clean without aggressive scrubbing, and ask about a hair-cutting method that leaves a little length above the skin.

Arrange review if bumps enlarge, drain, become painful, form thick scars, or cause hair loss at the hairline. Seek urgent help for spreading redness with fever or feeling acutely unwell.
