Does operative hysteroscopy treat uterine fibroids?

A hysteroscope enters through the vagina and cervix, so the procedure reaches the inside of the womb without an abdominal incision. A clinician may use an electric loop or another instrument to shave or remove a fibroid that bulges into the cavity. This type can contribute to heavy bleeding, spotting, or fertility concerns.

Fibroids located mainly within the muscle of the womb or on its outer surface are not usually reachable through the hysteroscope. Their size, depth, number, symptoms, and effect on the cavity influence the treatment choice. Ultrasound or other imaging helps map these details before a procedure.

Review your scan with a gynaecologist and ask which part of each fibroid is inside the cavity. Discuss whether hysteroscopic removal is likely to improve the symptom that concerns you, whether more than one procedure might be needed, and what alternatives exist.

Tell the team about medicines, anaesthesia reactions, pregnancy plans, and heavy bleeding. Ask how to prepare, what discharge is expected, and when normal activities can resume. The plan should reflect your symptoms and reproductive goals.

After hysteroscopy, obtain urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, fainting, shortness of breath, or worsening illness. Contact your clinician for persistent foul-smelling discharge or pain that is not settling.
