Does operative hysteroscopy treat recurrent miscarriage?

A thin camera passes through the vagina and cervix so a clinician can see the inside of the womb. Through the same route, specially designed instruments may remove a polyp, treat some fibroids that project into the cavity, or divide a uterine septum. These findings can affect the shape or lining of the womb and may be considered during a recurrent miscarriage assessment.

Recurrent miscarriage can also relate to chromosome changes, clotting or immune conditions, hormone problems, sperm factors, or other causes. Hysteroscopy cannot diagnose or correct all of these. It is therefore usually one part of an assessment rather than a universal solution.

Ask a gynaecologist or fertility specialist whether imaging has shown a cavity problem that hysteroscopy could treat. Bring details of previous pregnancies, procedures, scans, bleeding, and any test results. The clinician can explain whether an examination-only procedure or an operative procedure is appropriate, and whether tissue may be sent for laboratory assessment.

Before scheduling treatment, discuss anaesthesia, preparation, recovery, possible findings, and alternatives. Treatment should be matched to the specific abnormality rather than to the history of miscarriage alone.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, fever, or feeling very unwell after hysteroscopy. During a pregnancy, contact your maternity team promptly for bleeding, fluid leakage, significant pain, or reduced fetal movement when applicable.
