Does operative hysteroscopy treat Asherman syndrome?

Asherman syndrome involves adhesions, or bands of scar tissue, that join parts of the uterine cavity. During operative hysteroscopy, a thin camera passes through the vagina and cervix, allowing the surgeon to see the cavity and release adhesions with specialised instruments.

The aim is to restore the shape and openness of the cavity. The approach depends on how extensive and dense the adhesions are. Scar tissue can form again, so follow-up may include a repeat assessment and a plan to support healing.

Ask the surgical team how to prepare, whether medicines need adjustment, and when normal activities can resume. After the procedure, follow instructions about bleeding, pain relief, and any prescribed treatment. Keep every follow-up appointment so the cavity can be checked and further care arranged if needed.

Tell the team if pregnancy is a goal, because fertility planning can influence follow-up. Report your full medical and pregnancy history, including previous uterine procedures.

After hysteroscopy, contact the surgical team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, faintness, or unpleasant-smelling discharge. Before treatment, seek advice for persistent absent or very light periods, difficulty conceiving, or repeated pregnancy loss.
