Does oligohydramnios cause reduced baby movements?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected for the stage of pregnancy. Amniotic fluid cushions the baby and allows room for movement. When fluid is low, movement may feel different or reduced, although movement patterns also vary with gestational age, the baby’s position, and periods of sleep.

A change in movement cannot identify the cause by itself. Maternity clinicians may check the baby’s heartbeat, assess growth, and use ultrasound to measure fluid and review wellbeing.

Pay attention to your baby’s usual pattern rather than relying on a fixed number of movements. If movements are less frequent, weaker, or different from your baby’s normal pattern, contact your maternity unit immediately for advice. Do not wait until the next day or rely on a home device for reassurance.

If oligohydramnios has already been diagnosed, follow the monitoring plan and report any new movement change even if a previous check was reassuring.

Reduced or absent baby movements require immediate contact with your maternity unit. Seek urgent help as well for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, fever, or fluid leaking from the vagina.
