Does oesophagus removal surgery treat oesophageal cancer?

An oesophagectomy removes the section of the food pipe containing the tumour, together with nearby tissue and often nearby lymph nodes. The remaining oesophagus is joined to the stomach or another part of the digestive tract so food can continue to pass.

Whether surgery is suitable depends on the tumour’s position and spread, your general health, and whether the cancer can be removed safely. Treatment may also include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or both before or after surgery. Surgery is not suitable for every stage or situation.

Ask your cancer team how the tumour’s location and scan results affect the plan. They may discuss nutrition, breathing exercises, smoking cessation, medicines, and physical conditioning before surgery. Tell the team about swallowing problems or weight loss, because improving nutrition can support recovery.

Your surgeon should explain the approach, hospital stay, feeding arrangements, possible complications, and follow-up. You may need temporary changes to meal size, texture, and eating speed while healing.

After surgery, contact your team urgently for breathlessness, chest pain, fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or a new problem swallowing. These symptoms can signal infection, leakage, or another complication that needs assessment.
