Does obstetric cholestasis cause itching in pregnancy?

Obstetric cholestasis affects the way bile acids move through the liver during pregnancy. Bile acids can build up in the blood and trigger itching, often without a visible rash. It may be felt on the hands or feet, but it can occur elsewhere and may be worse at night.

The symptom needs checking because the condition can affect pregnancy care. Itching alone cannot establish the cause, so a maternity clinician may ask about its pattern and arrange blood tests that assess liver function and bile acids.

Tell your midwife, obstetrician, or maternity unit promptly about new or persistent itching, especially itching without a rash or symptoms on the palms and soles. Do not wait for a routine appointment if it is becoming intense or disturbing sleep.

Use only pregnancy-safe creams or medicines recommended by your healthcare team. Keep follow-up appointments even if the itching improves, because symptoms and blood-test results may change at different times.

Contact your maternity team urgently if itching is severe, suddenly worse, or accompanied by yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, right-sided upper abdominal pain, or reduced baby movements. Reduced movements require immediate pregnancy assessment.
