Can nutrition support help with unexplained weight loss during cancer?

Weight loss can happen when appetite falls, eating becomes uncomfortable, swallowing changes, taste is altered, or the body needs more support during illness. A cancer dietitian can review what you are managing to eat and suggest suitable meals, snacks, drinks or texture changes. The plan may also consider nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, mouth soreness and treatment schedules. Support is intended to protect strength and make eating more achievable; it cannot by itself remove the underlying cancer or every cause of weight loss.

Tell your oncology team about the weight change, appetite, symptoms and any difficulty shopping, preparing or swallowing food. Keep a simple record of foods and fluids you tolerate, and follow the personalised plan rather than forcing large meals. Small, frequent portions may be easier, with energy and protein added when advised. Do not start supplements or stop prescribed treatment without discussing the choice with your team.

Contact your oncology team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are choking or coughing while eating, have worsening mouth pain, or are taking very little because of symptoms. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting or signs of serious dehydration. Weight loss with new or worsening symptoms needs clinical review so the team can look for treatable causes.
