Does NIPT treat Down syndrome?

NIPT analyses small fragments of placental genetic material found in a pregnant person’s blood. It can provide a risk estimate for trisomy 21, the chromosome pattern associated with Down syndrome, but it is not a diagnostic test and cannot change a baby’s chromosomes.

A higher-chance result needs discussion with a qualified clinician. Diagnostic testing, such as a procedure that examines fetal or placental cells, may be offered to clarify the result. A lower-chance result does not rule out every condition.

Before testing, ask what conditions the panel covers, how results are reported, and what follow-up would be available. After a higher-chance result, pause before making decisions and request genetic counselling or specialist review. The timing and type of any confirmatory test depend on your pregnancy and personal circumstances.

Contact your maternity team when you receive a result you do not understand, especially a higher-chance or inconclusive result. Seek urgent pregnancy care for bleeding, severe pain, fluid loss, or reduced fetal movement when those symptoms apply to your stage of pregnancy.
