Does nipple thrush cause painful breastfeeding?

Nipple thrush may cause burning, stinging, or shooting pain during or after a feed. The nipple can look unusually pink, shiny, cracked, or irritated. Pain may continue between feeds, and the breast itself may feel painful even when skin changes are subtle.

These features can overlap with shallow attachment, damaged skin, blocked milk flow, mastitis, eczema, or another infection. A baby may also have oral thrush, so symptoms in both parent and baby should be considered together.

Arrange an assessment with a clinician or breastfeeding specialist, particularly when pain persists or feeds are becoming difficult. They can check latch, the nipple, the breast, and the baby’s mouth before recommending treatment.

Keep nipples clean and dry, change breast pads when damp, and wash hands before and after feeds. Continue feeding or expressing if comfortable; stopping suddenly may worsen breast fullness. Do not apply leftover creams or share medication without advice.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, a hot or red area on the breast, rapidly worsening pain, pus, or feeling markedly unwell. Urgent help is also appropriate if your baby is feeding poorly, unusually sleepy, or having fewer wet nappies.
