Does neurofibroma cause skin lumps?

A neurofibroma may feel soft, rubbery, or slightly compressible. Some are close to the surface and resemble skin-coloured or darker bumps; others sit deeper and may follow the path of a nerve. A person may have one growth or several, and the appearance can vary between individuals.

Many skin lumps have causes unrelated to neurofibroma, including cysts, blocked glands, fatty growths, or inflammation. A visual description alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may inspect and feel the lump, ask about its growth pattern and symptoms, and arrange further evaluation when its depth or nature is uncertain.

Arrange an assessment for a new, persistent, or changing lump, especially if you have a personal or family history of neurofibromatosis. Note when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether touching it causes pain, tingling, or an electric sensation.

Do not squeeze, cut, or repeatedly press the growth. If a confirmed neurofibroma is harmless and stable, observation may be reasonable. Removal or another treatment may be discussed when it causes pain, affects function, catches on clothing, or is a significant cosmetic concern. The choice depends on its depth and relationship to nearby nerves.

Seek prompt medical advice if a lump grows quickly, becomes hard or fixed, causes persistent or worsening pain, produces weakness or numbness, or changes with marked redness or drainage. Sudden neurological symptoms or severe pain require urgent assessment.

Ask what features support or oppose a neurofibroma diagnosis, whether imaging or a sample is needed, and how the lump will be monitored. If removal is considered, ask about nerve effects, scarring, recurrence, and the expected recovery.
