Does kidney removal surgery treat kidney cancer?

A nephrectomy removes either the whole kidney or, in selected situations, the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue while preserving the rest of the kidney. The choice depends on tumour size and position, whether nearby tissues are involved, the condition of the other kidney, and overall health.

Before surgery, imaging and blood tests help the team understand the disease and assess kidney function. Surgery may be one part of care; the final plan can include monitoring or additional treatment depending on the operation findings and pathology.

Ask the surgical team which type of nephrectomy is proposed and how kidney function will be monitored. Share information about blood pressure, diabetes, medicines, allergies, and previous operations. Follow guidance about fasting, activity, wound care, and avoiding medicines that could affect bleeding or the kidneys.

After surgery, contact the team for fever, increasing wound redness, fluid from the incision, worsening pain, repeated vomiting, or much less urine. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden confusion.
