Does chemotherapy before surgery treat rectal cancer?

Medicines given before an operation can travel through the body and treat cancer cells outside the visible rectal tumour. For some people, chemotherapy is combined with radiation or given around the same treatment period. This can reduce the tumour and help the team plan an operation, while also addressing the possibility of cancer beyond the original site.

The plan depends on tumour location, scan findings, tissue results, bowel symptoms, and general health. A response to chemotherapy does not by itself decide whether surgery is needed; the specialist team reviews the full picture.

Discuss the proposed order of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery with your colorectal team. Report changes in bowel habits, bleeding, pain, appetite, or weight. Follow instructions about blood tests, medicines, hydration, and eating, and ask who to call outside appointments.

Call the treatment team promptly for fever, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, new bleeding, inability to drink, or worsening abdominal pain. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with a swollen abdomen, fainting, confusion, or inability to pass stool or gas.
