Does chemotherapy before surgery treat inflammatory breast cancer?

Inflammatory breast cancer can involve breast skin and lymphatic channels, so treatment often begins with medicines that travel through the bloodstream. This approach can shrink or control cancer before an operation and helps the team assess how the tumour responds. Surgery is then considered when the cancer can be removed safely, followed by additional treatment based on the tumour's features and response.

The exact medicines depend on laboratory testing, including hormone-receptor and HER2 results, as well as scans and overall health. Chemotherapy before surgery is treatment for the cancer, but it is not automatically the only treatment needed.

Ask the breast oncology team to explain the sequence, intended goals, and how response will be checked. Keep a record of symptoms such as fever, unusual bruising, breathlessness, or worsening breast redness. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, pregnancy plans, and any infection before treatment starts.

Contact the oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled vomiting, confusion, or bleeding that does not stop. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden chest pain. Breast swelling, redness, or pain that worsens during treatment also needs clinical review.
