Does neck dissection treat mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer can spread through lymphatic channels to nodes in the neck. A neck dissection removes selected groups of nodes and may remove cancer already present there or help determine whether microscopic spread is present. The mouth tumour generally needs a separate local treatment, such as surgery, radiotherapy, or another approach chosen by the cancer team. The extent of neck surgery depends on examination, imaging, tumour position, and other pathology findings.

Ask how the neck procedure fits with treatment of the mouth and whether it will occur at the same operation. Discuss possible effects on shoulder movement, neck sensation, swallowing, speech, saliva, drains, and wound care. Keep a list of medicines and tell the team about dental problems, smoking, nutrition concerns, or difficulty eating, since these can affect preparation and recovery support.

After surgery, obtain urgent help for breathing difficulty, sudden swelling of the neck, or bleeding that will not stop. Call the surgical team about fever, increasing redness, drainage, severe pain, worsening swallowing, or new shoulder weakness. Before treatment, report rapidly worsening mouth swelling or inability to drink.
