Does nebuliser treatment treat acute bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis is irritation and inflammation of the breathing tubes, often after a respiratory infection. Cough, mucus, chest discomfort, and wheezing can occur. A nebuliser delivers medicine as a mist, and a clinician may use an airway-opening medicine when bronchitis has caused troublesome narrowing or when another airway condition is also present. The treatment supports breathing symptoms; it does not clear the cause of bronchitis on its own. An assessment can help distinguish bronchitis from pneumonia, asthma, or another problem that needs different care.

Use the nebuliser only if it has been prescribed for you, following the stated dose and cleaning instructions. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoke or other airway irritants. A cough can linger after the initial illness, so arrange a review if it is worsening, interfering with sleep, or not beginning to settle. Do not start antibiotics or nebulised medicine without clinical advice.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or an inability to speak comfortably. Seek prompt medical assessment for chest pain, coughing blood, severe weakness, dehydration, or a fever that is persistent or returning. Breathing that becomes harder despite the prescribed nebuliser also needs urgent attention because bronchitis may not be the only problem.
