Does nasal cautery help with nosebleed?

A clinician examines the inside of the nose and may use a chemical or heat method to seal a visible bleeding point. It is usually considered when nosebleeds keep returning from the same area or when simple measures have not controlled the problem. Cautery may not help if the bleeding source cannot be seen, if bleeding is coming from deeper in the nose, or if another condition is contributing.

During an active nosebleed, sit upright, lean slightly forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while breathing through the mouth. After cautery, follow the clinician’s instructions, avoid picking or forceful nose blowing, and keep the nasal lining moist if advised. Do not apply a product inside the nose unless a healthcare professional recommends it.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or does not settle with firm pressure. Arrange medical review for repeated episodes, easy bruising, bleeding from other sites, or use of medicines that affect clotting.
