Does narrowband UVB phototherapy help with scaly skin?

Narrowband UVB uses a controlled portion of ultraviolet B light to reduce inflammatory activity in selected skin diseases. As inflammation settles, plaques or patches may become less thick, red, and scaly. Scaling can also result from fungal infection, irritation, allergy, very dry skin, or another disorder that needs a different approach. A clinician may inspect the distribution, surface, nails, scalp, and other symptoms before recommending phototherapy. The treatment is not a general exfoliation procedure.

Do not pick or scrape scales, because this can break the skin and encourage irritation or infection. Use the cleanser and moisturiser advised for you, and mention any creams, tablets, or supplements that make you more sensitive to light. During treatment, follow eye protection and clothing instructions exactly. Tell the clinic if treated skin remains very red, becomes sore, or develops blisters; the exposure schedule may need changing.

Arrange prompt assessment if scaling spreads quickly, is painful, oozes, forms crusts, or comes with fever. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, breathing trouble, or a widespread blistering reaction. New scaling on the scalp with hair loss, or around the eyes or genitals, also deserves targeted examination rather than self-treatment.
