An ingrown toenail develops when the nail edge presses into or grows into the nearby skin, often at the side of a big toe. Do not cut deeply into the corners or pull at a loose dressing. A clinician may recommend simple wound care and pain relief that suits your health history. If the nail is repeatedly painful, draining, or limiting walking, arrange an assessment so the cause and treatment extent can be discussed.

Seek prompt medical advice if redness spreads beyond the toe, swelling is increasing, drainage becomes heavy or foul-smelling, or pain worsens instead of easing. Fever, a red streak moving up the foot, or difficulty bearing weight needs urgent assessment.
