Can nail fungus cause brittle nails?

Fungal activity may disturb the nail plate and the tissue beneath it. The affected nail can become rough, dry, crumbly, or split at the edge. A damaged nail may also catch on socks or shoes. Brittle nails have other possible explanations, including repeated wetting and drying, knocks, picking, or skin conditions, so this symptom alone does not establish the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if brittleness persists, spreads to other nails, or makes walking or daily tasks uncomfortable. Seek prompt care for marked redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, or increasing pain around the nail. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when a foot or nail problem appears.
