Does myomectomy treat uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle or surrounding tissue of the uterus. A myomectomy removes selected fibroids rather than removing the uterus. The operation may be performed through the vagina and cervix, with keyhole surgery, or through an abdominal incision, depending on the fibroids and clinical plan.

The aim may be to improve symptoms such as heavy periods, pressure, pelvic pain, or fertility problems linked to the fibroids. It is not suitable for every person, and fibroids can recur or new ones can appear later.

A gynaecologist will consider your symptoms, scan findings, fibroid location, size and number, general health, and whether you hope to become pregnant. Observation, medicines, non-surgical procedures, and other operations may also be discussed.

Before agreeing to surgery, ask how the fibroids affect the uterine cavity, which route is planned, how long recovery may take, and what follow-up or pregnancy planning is advised. Treating anaemia before an operation may also be appropriate when bleeding has been heavy.

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with weakness or faintness, fever, or symptoms suggesting infection. Following myomectomy, promptly report worsening pain, fever, heavy bleeding, wound changes, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Ask which fibroids are causing symptoms, whether myomectomy fits your pregnancy goals, what alternatives exist, and how recurrence or ongoing symptoms would be monitored.
