Does myomectomy help with pelvic pain?

Fibroids can cause a feeling of pressure, heaviness, or aching when they enlarge the uterus or press on nearby structures. Removing a fibroid that is linked to these symptoms may reduce that mechanical pressure. Pain related to heavy bleeding or painful periods may also change after treatment.

Pelvic pain can also come from endometriosis, adenomyosis, infection, ovarian conditions, bladder problems, or bowel conditions. Imaging and a detailed symptom history help determine whether a fibroid is a plausible source rather than assuming every pain is fibroid-related.

Keep a record of where the pain occurs, when it appears, its relationship to periods, and whether sex, urination, or bowel movements affect it. Share this with your gynaecologist. They may use an examination and ultrasound or other imaging to assess the uterus and consider non-surgical treatment.

If myomectomy is recommended, discuss the surgical approach, expected recovery, effects on fertility plans, and how pain will be managed after the procedure. A plan should address other suspected causes if the pain pattern does not fit fibroids.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with faintness, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, or possible pregnancy. After surgery, worsening pain, fever, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or a painful swollen leg needs prompt medical attention.

Ask what evidence connects the fibroid to your pain, which other causes have been considered, what improvement is realistic, and how persistent pain would be investigated after treatment.
