Does myeloproliferative neoplasms cause persistent fatigue?

Myeloproliferative neoplasms are blood cancers in which the bone marrow makes too many blood cells. Fatigue can develop when abnormal blood production affects oxygen delivery, circulation, sleep, or the body's energy balance. It may also be related to an enlarged spleen, inflammation, treatment effects, or another condition such as anaemia, thyroid disease, infection, or low mood. Fatigue can persist even after rest, so describe what it feels like rather than judging it only by sleep.

Keep a brief record of when tiredness began, how it affects walking or work, sleep quality, breathlessness, dizziness, fevers, night sweats, and medicines. Arrange a review with the clinician managing your blood condition. They may examine you and use blood tests to check blood counts and look for treatable contributors. Gentle activity within your limits, regular meals, fluids, and planned rest can help conserve energy; avoid pushing through marked weakness.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe headache. Contact your care team promptly if fatigue worsens quickly or comes with bleeding, persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or a rapidly enlarging abdomen.
