Does myelofibrosis cause abdominal swelling?

Myelofibrosis is a disorder of the bone marrow that can change how blood cells are made. The spleen may enlarge as it takes on more blood-making work, creating fullness or pressure, usually on the upper left side of the abdomen. An enlarged liver or fluid accumulation can also contribute to abdominal enlargement in some situations.

Abdominal swelling can also result from digestive problems, fluid retention, liver disease, infection, or other conditions. Its presence does not diagnose myelofibrosis. A clinician may examine the abdomen and arrange blood tests or imaging to identify the reason.

Arrange a medical assessment if swelling is new, persistent, increasing, or associated with early fullness after eating, left-sided discomfort, weight change, night sweats, unusual tiredness, bruising, or fever. Note when it began, whether meals affect it, changes in bowel habits, and any breathing or movement difficulty.

Choose smaller meals if fullness makes eating difficult, avoid activities that cause abdominal pain, and take medicines only as directed. Do not press repeatedly on a tender area or begin water tablets without medical advice.

Get urgent help for sudden severe abdominal pain, a hard or rapidly enlarging abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, black or bloody stools, severe breathlessness, or high fever. Prompt assessment is especially important when swelling is accompanied by marked weakness or bleeding.

Ask whether the spleen or liver may be enlarged, whether fluid is present, and which examination or tests can clarify the cause. Ask what activities and foods are suitable, how symptoms will be monitored, and which changes need same-day advice.
