Does muscle relaxant medication help with back muscle spasm?

A spasm is an involuntary tightening that can restrict movement and make the back feel locked or guarded. Some prescribed medicines reduce muscle activity or the sensation of spasm, which may make gentle movement easier. They can also cause drowsiness, dizziness or reduced alertness, and suitability depends on your health, other medicines and the suspected cause.

Medication is usually considered alongside staying gently active, heat when comfortable, and a plan to restore movement. It should not be used to push through worsening pain or neurological symptoms.
