Does twin and multiple pregnancy cause morning sickness?

Morning sickness describes nausea with or without vomiting during pregnancy; it can happen at any time of day. Hormonal changes in a multiple pregnancy may make nausea or vomiting more noticeable for some people. Others have mild symptoms or none, so symptoms do not establish whether a pregnancy is singleton or multiple.

An ultrasound is the usual way to confirm the number of pregnancies and assess development. The intensity of nausea can vary from day to day and is not a measure of pregnancy health by itself.

Try small, frequent meals and keep plain foods available when nausea is strongest. Sip fluids regularly; chilled drinks or ice chips may be easier to tolerate. Rest, avoid smells that trigger symptoms, and tell your maternity clinician if eating or drinking is becoming difficult.

A clinician can review medicines that are suitable in pregnancy and check for dehydration or other causes of vomiting. Do not start a medicine or supplement without checking its safety for your pregnancy.

Seek prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel faint, have severe weakness, vomit blood, or develop significant abdominal pain or fever. Dehydration can develop quickly when vomiting is persistent and may need treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, which foods and fluids to prioritise, whether an anti-sickness medicine is appropriate, and when your ultrasound will confirm the number of babies.
