Does mole removal treat an atypical mole?

An atypical mole has features that differ from an ordinary mole, such as uneven colour, an irregular outline, or variation in shape. These features do not by themselves establish melanoma. A clinician may photograph and monitor a mole, take a partial sample, or remove it completely, depending on its appearance and changes over time. When the mole is removed, a laboratory examines the tissue and reports whether it is benign, atypical, or cancerous and whether further care is needed.

Removal deals with the selected mole. It does not prevent other atypical moles from developing, so a skin-check plan may still be useful.

Book a dermatology assessment for a mole that is changing in size, shape, colour, or sensation, or one that bleeds or crusts. Do not shave, burn, or use home removal products on it. Bring any earlier photographs and mention family history of melanoma, previous skin cancers, and medicines that affect healing or bleeding. Ask when the pathology result will be available and keep the follow-up appointment so the result can be explained clearly.

Seek prompt review for a rapidly changing mole, a new dark spot that looks unlike your other marks, persistent bleeding, or a lesion that becomes painful or persistently itchy. After removal, contact the clinic for ongoing bleeding, increasing warmth or redness, pus, fever, wound opening, or pain that is getting worse rather than settling.

Ask whether the mole should be monitored or removed, what removal method is planned, how the scar may look, when the pathology report is due, and whether other moles need a baseline examination.
